At the time of writing this (1st Jan 2011) I have been an ESL teacher for 7 years. I have taught General, Academic and Business English to students of all levels. I have also had the pleasure of working with and teaching students from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. One of the most important things to me in life is making a difference in any way I can and teaching gives me the opportunity to do this. It really makes me happy when I see students learn, progress and move on to fulfilling their own goals and dreams. That is the main reason for writing this book.
I recall when I first moved to Madrid years ago. I had been learning Spanish for a few years and working mainly from text books. I remember how disappointed and frustrated I felt trying to settle into Madrid life and having so many problems communicating with the locals. Not because my Spanish wasn’t good enough but because people (young and old) had a wide variety of vocabulary that I had never heard before and my text books certainly hadn’t covered it. I started to learn how the locals speak and it was a truly wonderful experience to really start connecting with Spanish people. It really helped me to feel part of Spanish life and so much more was on offer to me, such as making friends. So I wanted to put together a vocabulary book for English learners that will provide them with up to date vocabulary for the exact reason of learning how the locals speak. Thus, providing them with every opportunity to really connect and assimilate into society in countries where English is the native language.
I have always been a very adventurous teacher and thoroughly enjoy trying new lessons with a whole melting pot of cultures and students of all ages. The lessons I have included in this book are all tried and tested and I have found great success with them all. I sincerely hope that you and your students do too.
